What it can't do is read the package in your hand. Ingredients change, labels change, kitchens cross-contaminate. If someone in your family has a serious allergy, the last check is always yours, and we'd rather say that plainly than bury it in the terms.
Where you set it
- During setup: tap Yes, we work around allergies, read the note, and tap I understand — let's set it up. Then check off each allergen and pick how you handle it.
- Any time after: open Settings and tap Allergies. Make your changes and tap Save.
- In the Hive, allergies are under Lines I never cross. Tap Edit to change them.
Steps (in Settings)
- On Home, tap the gear icon, then Allergies.
- Check off each allergen in your household: Milk, Eggs, Fish, Shellfish, Tree Nuts, Peanuts, Wheat, Soybeans or Sesame.
- Under each one, pick how you handle it. Tap the info icon next to an option to see what it means.
- Add a note if there's anything else to know. It's optional.
- Tap Save.
The four ways to handle an allergen
- Never in the house: it won't appear in any meal or on your grocery list. If a recipe would normally call for it, UnBizzy suggests a different dish.
- Swap the ingredient: same dinner, with a safe alternative, like gluten-free flour.
- Make a separate portion: the meal goes ahead as normal, with a safe version alongside it. Both go on your grocery list.
- They eat something else: the meal goes ahead unchanged, and UnBizzy suggests an alternative for whoever can't have it.
You can pick more than one of the last three, since many families handle it differently depending on the meal. Never in the house is a choice on its own.
When UnBizzy makes a change
A meal it has adjusted carries a short note on the recipe, like "Made this egg-free… Double-check I got it right."
An allergy that isn't on the list?
UnBizzy's allergy list covers nine: milk, eggs, fish, shellfish, tree nuts, peanuts, wheat, soybeans and sesame. It can't plan around any other allergy as an allergy yet. If someone in your house has one, check every recipe and every label yourself, every time.
Good to know
- Allergies are recorded for your household as a whole, not for each person.
- Allergies are a safety setting. Foods your family just doesn't like go in your dislikes instead. See Dislikes, diets and cooking time.
